Genie & Agent Bricks from scratch [1] - What the AI/BI Genie is and how it works on top of Unity Catalog
Fala dataholics!
A família Genie: Spaces, Agents, One, Code e Ontology
A grande novidade: Genie Ontology, Unity Catalog Metrics e o OntoRank

A família Genie: Spaces, Agents, One e Code
Ele fica no topo, orquestrando as outras capacidades.
A família Genie: Spaces (virando Agents), Genie Agents reutilizáveis, Genie One (coworker), Genie Code (engenharia) e o Genie Ontology no centro.

Hey dataholics! Today I'm pumped because we're kicking off a new series here on the blog: Genie & Agent Bricks from scratch. The idea is to show, from concept to practice, everything Azure Databricks offers so you can build agents that talk to your data. And we start with the heart of it all: the AI/BI Genie.
Imagine anyone in your company, even someone who has never written a line of SQL, asking your data questions in plain language and getting the right answer back, with a governed query running behind the scenes. That's exactly what Genie does, and it's awesome. And with the 2026 news, especially the Genie Ontology, it went from just generating SQL to actually understanding your business.
What we'll cover in this post:
What the AI/BI Genie is
How it works under the hood on top of Unity Catalog
The Genie family: Spaces, Agents, One, Code and Ontology
The big news: Genie Ontology, Unity Catalog Metrics and OntoRank
Why this matters and what's coming in the series

What the AI/BI Genie is
The AI/BI Genie is Databricks' natural language interface for your data. In practice, you point Genie at a set of governed tables and views in Unity Catalog and let the business folks ask things like "what was revenue by region last quarter?" or "how many new customers came in this month?". Genie interprets the question, generates the SQL, runs it and returns the answer, often already with a chart.
The point I always make sure to reinforce: there's no guessing here. It's a text-to-SQL engine running inside your platform, with your data and respecting your governance. The answer comes straight from the table, with real SQL behind it.
Reginaldo, but isn't that the same as giving everyone access to the database to run queries however they want?
No, and that's the beauty of it. Genie runs on top of Unity Catalog, so it respects the permissions you've already set up. Whoever doesn't have access to a table won't see its data through Genie. Democratizing data access happens without you giving up governance.
How Genie works under the hood
It's worth understanding the flow, because it explains everything that comes next:
Context: Genie reads the Unity Catalog metadata (table names, columns, comments, types and relationships) to understand what's there.
Interpretation: the natural language question is turned into an intent and, from the context, becomes a SQL query.
Execution: the SQL runs on a SQL Warehouse, meaning on your compute, with your cost and your performance.
Governance: everything goes through Unity Catalog. Permissions, lineage and auditing still apply.
Response: the result comes back as a table or visualization, and the user can ask a follow-up while keeping the conversation context.
IMPORTANT DETAIL: the quality of the answer depends directly on how well your environment is described. Tables with no comments, columns with cryptic names and zero business context make Genie work in the dark. That's why Microsoft and Databricks invested heavily in the semantic layer, which is exactly where Ontology comes in later.
The Genie family: Spaces, Agents, One and Code
When people say "Genie", they usually think only of the little question box. But at the Data + AI Summit 2026 Databricks expanded Genie into a whole family of products. Let's go through each one:
Genie Spaces: the base of it all. A curated conversation space focused on a topic (sales, finance, logistics), with the tables, instructions and examples for that domain. They've already passed 1 million Spaces created. It's the foundation that is evolving into Genie Agents.
Genie Agents: the evolution of Spaces. Instead of a loose conversation, you save any Genie conversation as a reusable agent that inherits the memory, the sources and the instructions from that conversation. Then the whole team calls that agent by name and repeats the flow. They reason over structured and unstructured data and take action in your business tools. Along with it comes the Genie App Builder to assemble those agents.
Genie One: the universal agentic coworker. It's the Genie for business people (marketing, finance, sales, HR) that answers questions, produces documents and reports, runs scheduled tasks and takes action via MCP tools. It works on the web, on iOS, on Android and inside Slack and Microsoft Teams. It sits at the top, orchestrating the other capabilities.
Genie Code: the autonomous engineering partner, already GA. Think of it as an agent that helps build, debug, optimize and operate data and AI pipelines inside Databricks. It's the "agentic engineering" side of the family, with integration via MCP server.
Genie Ontology: the brain at the center of everything, the context layer that makes all the previous ones answer better. I'll detail it in the next section, because it's the big turning point.
There's also Genie ZeroOps in private preview, aiming at automatic operation. Features like multi-step reasoning and Deep Research (which delivers detailed answers with citations) are built into this experience. And, underneath, you can integrate everything into your applications via the Conversation API and expose Genie as a tool for other agents through the Managed MCP Server.
Notice how this already paves the way for the whole series: the same Genie that answers in chat can become a reusable Genie Agent, be orchestrated by Genie One or become a tool for an agent over in Agent Bricks.
The big news of 2026: Genie Ontology
For me, this is the most important part. The Genie Ontology is a living context layer, a knowledge graph that improves itself and keeps learning your business from your tables, dashboards, queries, notebooks, pipelines and more than 50 connected applications. Instead of guessing what "engagement" or "active customer" means with every question, Genie starts using a verified definition.
This context relies on two important pieces:
Unity Catalog Metrics (Business Semantics): now GA and open source, it's where you define your business KPIs once, like revenue, churn, active users and margin, as governed and reusable objects. Genie queries this official definition instead of trying to build the math by hand.
OntoRank: the mechanism that ranks knowledge by authority. As a Databricks engineer summed it up, "PageRank ranked web pages, OntoRank ranks different types of data". It uses signals like the credibility of who created it, breadth of usage, links between datasets and recency, so the agent trusts the right definition, not the one that happens to match the text.
The result of this shows up in the number: in Databricks' tests, answer accuracy rose from around 50% to 84.5% once this context came into play. And it's not just accuracy, it comes with less hallucination, lower token cost and less latency, because the agent stops chasing fragmented context.
Ontology also brought richer semantic modeling: multi-fact relationships, level of detail (LOD) calculations and parameterized metrics that adapt to the question at runtime.
Reginaldo, so do I need to configure this Ontology by hand?
No. The good part is that Ontology builds and maintains this map of your business automatically, extracting and ranking knowledge from your sources. Your job is to feed the base well: define the metrics in Unity Catalog, comment your tables properly and curate the Spaces. The better the input, the better the context.
Preparing Genie to answer well
Even with all this automatic intelligence, a well-curated Genie Space is still what separates a mediocre Genie from a reliable one. The main ingredients, which I'll detail in the next posts of the series, are:
General instructions: text instructions telling the business context and rules of that domain.
Sample SQL (example queries): examples of questions and the expected SQL, which teach Genie to structure similar answers.
Trusted assets: verified SQL queries and functions that deliver certified answers, giving an extra layer of confidence.
Benchmarks: a set of test questions with the expected answer, so you can measure and improve the Space's accuracy over time.
Comments and metrics in Unity Catalog: the base of it all, because it feeds the context and the Ontology.
Why this matters
Look, I've worked with Databricks for a long time and I've always argued that the biggest data bottleneck in companies isn't technical, it's access. There's good data sitting idle because the queue for an analyst to write the query is huge. Genie attacks exactly that: it puts data self-service in the hands of whoever needs the answer, without giving up Unity Catalog governance.
And since everything runs inside Azure Databricks, you get this on top of the environment you already have, with the security, lineage and cost control you already know. It's the Lakehouse becoming, in fact, a data agent platform.
RECAP
AI/BI Genie: natural language interface that does governed text-to-SQL on top of Unity Catalog.
Native governance: respects permissions, lineage and auditing. Whoever doesn't have access to the table won't see the data.
The Genie family: Spaces (becoming Agents), reusable Genie Agents, Genie One (coworker), Genie Code (engineering) and Genie Ontology at the center.
Genie Ontology: a context layer that learns the business on its own and uses OntoRank to trust the most authoritative definition.
Unity Catalog Metrics: define the KPIs once, in a governed way, and Genie uses the official definition.
Result: in Databricks' tests, accuracy rose from 50% to 84.5% with the context applied, with less hallucination and lower cost.
Without a doubt Genie is one of the coolest features in our Databricks arsenal, and the foundation for everything coming up in the series. In the next posts we dig into the types of Genie in detail, into how to curate a high-quality Space and, of course, into the hands-on building a Genie from scratch on Azure Databricks.
